From Statecraft to Sovereignty

Sovrenia was founded by John McNally, a strategist forged in the British tradition of statecraft and shaped by Singapore’s discipline of governance and nation-building. His experience spans continents — from the structures of government and finance to the front lines of reform and recovery.
He graduated with First-Class Honours from the University of Cambridge, where his studies in political economy and global security shaped a lifelong focus on how nations rise, falter, and endure.
He witnessed the transition to majority rule in South Africa — a moment of promise later eroded by political fragmentation and institutional weakness — reinforcing an enduring lesson: renewal requires discipline, not rhetoric.
John spent a decade with the Singapore Government, working in national security and strategic planning — from police reform to workforce resilience — absorbing the pragmatism and long-horizon thinking that underpin effective governance.
He later joined the British Government in Westminster, advising Ministers on domestic reform and supporting communications during the London G20 Summit at the height of the global financial crisis — a formative experience in stabilising fragile systems under pressure.
He then served ten years with the World Bank Group’s IFC (International Finance Corporation) in Washington, D.C., leading communications for a multi-billion-dollar global portfolio and strengthening trade and investment across some of the world’s most complex and fragile markets.

John has seen cities levelled by nature and institutions weakened by politics — and learned the discipline required to rebuild both.
His work has taken him from post-earthquake reconstruction in Pakistan, to informal settlements in Peru, and to post-conflict environments in occupied Palestine — where constraint, legitimacy, and consequence intersect.
From national elections to conference ballrooms and presidential palaces, he has worked across the spectrum where ideas harden into decisions and decisions carry consequence.
In Washington, he saw how narratives shape action and how clarity cuts through politics when stakes are real. These experiences taught him to read undercurrents and discern consequence before systems strain.
